Weight: 66 Kg
How did you get started?
Hard-work and I are childhood friends and I believe that plays a major role in making me self-dependent and self-reliant. I remember myself as an introvert and a very shy girl till high school but how gradually I became a rebel, a stubborn and strong headed fearless woman is a long story. For those who think I was born with the physique I have today- no, I have earned it!
Growing up has been the biggest challenge to date for me- beating a severe illness and overcoming a troubled childhood to build myself up both mentally and physically. I was affected a lot emotionally and mentally but by God’s grace I survived through everything. The estranged relations of my parents lead to their divorce and they deserted me at the tender age of 2. I was brought up by my parental grandparents in a big joint family. Since childhood, I started putting on a lot of weight owing to the treatment of a serious and prolonged illness and this weight gain became almost incessant. Not just the weight gain, a terrible bout of acne was also a side effect. Everybody, be it in school or friends and family ridiculed me. Deep inside I knew that one fine day I am going to show them all what I am made of. How? I did not know then but I will, so sure I was. I started working as early as 17 in my life. I joined a gym to get in shape and simultaneously started taking up group aerobics classes as a freelancer to meet my own expenses. My first salary was Rs. 1500 per month. In the mornings, I used to teach kindergarten children at a school and in the evenings, the freelancing. All this was very difficult because neither did I have an experience of doing any of it before nor I had any certificates to prove my credentials but I had a strong willpower to carry on which kept me poised on an otherwise coarse journey. I left home and burnt the midnight oil. In my quest for knowledge, I enrolled myself for a basic Aerobics course with Reebok. I received my certification for an Aerobics trainer but I did not restrict myself. I kept on reading, studying, enrolled myself with advanced courses on exercise prescription, nutrition, various exercise methods, kept on attending national and international seminars and workshops. I did many certifications in the field of fitness. I am an ACSM certified personal trainer, a professional aerobics instructor from Reebok and did course certifications in Kettle bell, Kickboxing and Steps as well. The year 2001 was a major breakthrough in my career. I did a 30 episode series on aerobics and strength training with DD Sports channel which are on-air till date. In 2005, I participated in Gladrags, a popular modeling/ beauty event organized by Maureen Wadia, wife of Nusli Wadia (owner of Wadia group of Industries) . I won the Gladrags Mrs. India ‘Best Body’ Title. In 2011, I got back to the small screen with Travel Trends, a private channel. I did a 50 episode series on strength training and aerobics based on the various dance forms including hip-hop, free style, belly dance and bhangra. Besides being the trainer and performer, I was the script writer and anchor of the show as well. It was a big hit which aired for more than a year.
I believe The Universe Always Serves My Highest Interest! Gradually my Passion for fitness turned into my profession and then there was no looking back. My hunger for learning and improving is insatiable. I am in competition with no one but myself! I strive to be a better version of myself each new day. My 18 years of hands-on experience in fitness and sports nutrition makes ‘fitness’ my lifestyle and I try to inculcate the same passion in people who are serious about their fitness. I believe that a strong woman can play several roles with perfection and training with weights certainly doesn’t make a woman look manly. I want to take fitness to a level where it is no longer considered burdensome but rather people enjoy being hale and hearty. Earning a fit and healthy body is the biggest of all the riches in the world!
Today at 37, I am a successful entrepreneur and run a gym named ‘Sculpt’ in Gurgaon, Haryana which came to inception in 2007, the aerobics however commenced in 2003.
‘SCULPT’ is not just my venture, it is my ‘child’. At Sculpt, we equally cater to the needs of every member of ours- be it a beginner or a pro. I myself chalk out all the personalized training workout plans and chisel my trainers in order to keep them abreast with the latest trends and techniques. The adrenaline rush keeps pumping us hard all the time and we strive our level best to give the Best to the dedicated and determined disciples. We are a Great team and take pride in how far we have come and keep pushing forward to take SCULPT to dizzying heights.
Where does your motivation come from?
It is only one’s PASSION n PASSION which keeps one going, come what may. I am very passionate about whatever I do in life. I have my extremes to everything I do. Either I’ll give it my all or not do it at all. Half- heartedness isn’t an ingredient for my existence! I have always been self-driven and I believe in myself! I am my own Sculptor. I am a very hard-working, strong headed and focused woman. If I set a goal then nothing and absolutely NOTHING can distract me. This comes naturally to me. I am blessed with a strong will power and yes, it requires a lot of sacrifices. Whether it is hours long toil at the gym or not taking a day off for months and literally putting blood, sweat and tears into my Passion, I’ll do it. I’ll do it all! The Best part about following your own Heart is, you never ever have to slog a day in your life. There will be tough days and even tougher times but eventually you will get to know that it is ‘You’ who is the toughest and can continue despite all odds. Nothing can hither and thither me, once I decide on something. You need to have an absolute FOCUS in LIFE!!! All I see is “My Goals” and not the hustle and bustle around. Always ‘Trust yourself when all men doubt you’.
Nobody can instil/ inject it in you until and unless, you already have that Fire within you. I have that Fire within burning like hell and nothing…Absolutely Nothing can stop me! There is no obstacle that you cannot overcome with your determination and meticulous hard work.
Our body and mind have infinite ability. Our ability never restricts us, our thoughts do. If we think we can, we can. If we think we cannot, we cannot.
How do you feel your flexibility helps you both in and out of the gym?
Inside the gym, flexibility is a very important component of fitness so it helps a lot when I have to train every single muscle through its full range of motion day after day injury free.
Being flexible helps outside the gym too as the body feels very light and agile and most of the tasks are done effortlessly. A small session of Stretching everyday calms my mind and recharges me.
What workout routine has worked best for you?
I train 6 days a week, twice a day, for a total of 3 to 3.5 hrs a day.
Off season, I train, 5 to 6 days a week, 1.5 to 2 hours a day. I keep periodising my training so as to challenge myself, the muscles grow and gain strength that ways.
If you had to pick only 3 exercises what would they be and why?
This is a compound exercise which engages your entire body and is extremely taxing on the muscles. It burns a lot of calories and builds a strong core. It is a power movement which equips the body in lifting heavy objects off the floor using the strength of the entire body.
This is the grand daddy of all lower body movements, an effective tool for increasing lower body strength and power. It is one of the most functional exercises.
3. HIP THRUST:
The only movement which isolates the Glutes completely and apart from improving the strength and power, gives an amazingly aesthetic appeal to the backside 😉 Lately, I got obsessed with Bench Press too while training for powerlifting and am hell bent upon doing a 100 kg bench press for 1 rep soon.
What is your diet like?
I take 6 meals a day which include the different combinations from the following:
Carbs- Oats, White Rice, Sweet Potatoes, White Potatoes, Apples, Bananas, Jowar/ Bajra Rotis.
Protein- Chicken, Eggs, Paneer, Protein supplements (Whey, Casein)
Fats- Almonds, Walnuts, Coconut oil, Egg yolks, Omega-3 capsules In addition to the above, I take supplements for certain micronutrients. I eat to perform and for aesthetics as well. I cheat once in a while. When close to a competition, I am extremely disciplined. When off-season, I do cheat quite often but then I train hard enough and that compensates all 🙂
What’s the one food you couldn’t live without, and how do you handle food cravings?
I have a sweet tooth, so be it Ice Creams, Dark Chocolates, Cakes or Desserts, I give into temptations. To handle my craving for the same, I either eat some raisins/ fig/ apple or I make an Oat and Banana Protein pancake.
What’s something not many people know about you?
Well, if not many know about it, let it remain lesser known 😉
‘I will do more than just more forward, I will bend but never break, I will keep coming around like a boomerang.’
‘Trust yourself when all men doubt you.’
‘Our mind and body have infinite abilities. If we think we can, We Can, If we think we cannot, We Cannot.’
