How did you get started?
It was my best friends wedding. At the time belly dancing and walking to and from work were my only form of exercise.
I was hoping to get great professional photo of an epic day. Once I saw the photos I was MEGA upset. I always believed my mind was the sexist things I owned. However the casing left much to be desired.
First thought was is that me?
Is that how I present myself to the world?
I was 28 at the time. I felt I looked like a mother of 5 who had given up on life and had 2 mega ham joints as arms, 2 turkey as thighs and boulder for a stomach.
I was a whale in a sari!
Few days after the wedding I had to change my medication for polycystic ovaries. Taking one tablet made my vision go blurry, heart beat elevated and weak. The nurse told me to loose weight and you won’t need to take the tablets.
I remember thinking I’m 28 I’m meant to be in the prime of my life. Not out of breath going up 1 flight of stairs. So I decided to get swap my shoes for trainers , take an anti histamine ( at the type if I sweat it would leave my skin lumpy and burning ), towel and water and head to pure gym.
Where does your motivation come from?
What keeps me motivated :
-my body has to reflect my mind and soul.
– my dad side of the family suffer from cancer and mum’s side suffer from heart problems. So I have to give myself a fighting chance
-it relaxes me. Before my mind can get tired but my body would be active. Resulting in insomnia. Working out allows my mind and body to be on the same level of tiredness
– results are addictive. I wake up and it’s like Christmas everyday. We should love ourselves enough to treat ourselves right before we can look after others.
-I have a university diploma in physiology, a bachelor degree in fashion and a masters in fashion. I have a inquisitive, learning and expolring nature. Working out really satisfies that part of me.
– I used to be shy and going to pure gym has allowed my to work on that and come out of my she’ll. I have meet some wonderful souls on this journey.
What workout routine has worked best for you?
I can’t handle early morning work outs. I believe people who can are superhuman and should be given a cape and fly instead of using public transport.
I am very lucky that where I work is close to my gym. After work a hop skip and a jump and I can turn beast mode on and smash my work out.
I hate cardio. I know hate is a strong word but it really applies to cardio. The only cardio I do sprinting and skipping. Erdi Babaili my personal trainer ( @erdibirdy on insta) creates amazingly effective work outs that fun. Combination of jumps, weights, gymnastics and body weight type exercise.
If you had to pick only 3 exercises what would they be and why?
skipping , clean and press and handstands. Why? Coz I find them fun. If it’s not fun I’m not paying attention.
What is your diet like?
Upon jeannie hinds advice my nutritionist ( @jeanniehind insta) and erdi my diet is high protein low refined process carbs.
What’s the one food you couldn’t live without, and how do you handle food cravings?
My inner fat kid won’t let go of the coco. Chocolate preferably dark chocolate is my addiction.
When I first started on this journey I also started a journey of law of attraction mindset. Like attracts like. I was creating a vision board. At work I printed a pic of a girl who’s figure I felt reflected my body goal. A coworker saw it and I explained and he laughed in my face for 10 mins saying I can never get it. I’m a Taurus, you don’t tell no to my dreams and think I’m gonna accept it.
Also having extended family making fun of my weight as a kid. Especially aunt who embarrassed me in front of the whole family for my weight.
So I take a negative memory and change it to a positive motivation. Got to put the player haters wrong by getting my grind on.
I have to thank these people for creating these memories that fuel my dreams.
But I got to do it for that waking up in the morning and looking at myself in the mirror and be like gosh I love the way I look and feel feeling.
