How did you get started?

It started early 2012. I had gained immense weight since 2006 and by 2011 none of my clothes would fit me anymore. It was my mother who pushed me early on in 2012 telling me that I really should start working on myself. I had lost all my confidence, I used to even hate going out. So 2012 I started eating right, started running, still hadn’t joined a gym. But I lost about 17 kilos in one year by doing that and then i wanted to join the gym to tone my body up. That’s how my love for working out really started .

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation comes from looking at myself. I keep telling myself I can get better, I can do better. I never want to go back to being fat and being that under confident woman again. And I idolise the fitness model, Michelle Lewin. Every time i look at her picture it only makes me want to push harder, do better. And I would never want to give this up.

How do you feel your flexibility helps you both in and out of the gym?

It helps a lot. Working out not only helps you feel good and look better but for a person like me who loves to travel and go hiking and trekking this flexibility and this energy helps me have more fun and enjoy the long hikes and treks. I feel energetic in my day to day to life .

What workout routine has worked best for you?

I enjoy weight training the most. Drop sets, pyramid sets, super sets ….they work best. I take smaller breaks and do more reps. It helps burn more calories and also tones my body and helps me gain muscle. My cardio is mostly functional training and even though it completely drains me, i feel it’s the most fun than doing the regular cross trainer or the treadmill. But of all the workouts i have tried, the really good old school weight training has been the best for me.

If you had to pick only 3 exercises what would they be and why?

Squats. They are my most favourite. Not only does it help with your legs and glutes but works on your entire body. And squats burn a lot more calories than a lot of other exercises while working on your strength.

Deadlift – Totally love it. Works more muscles than other exercise. The lift engages all of the major muscle groups. Works great on your lower back and upper body and the back muscles. Deadlifts, done correctly helps building mass while strengthening all other muscle groups. The fact it helps in core stability is one major reason I love it.

Push ups – Took me a while to get this one right and to even do it. But by far one of my favourites now. Increases Functional strength, works on core muscles, anterior deltoids, lower body muscle groups, chest. One just can’t ignore push ups.

What is your diet like?

I try and eat clean as much as possible. Breakfast is always heavy; I aim for a breakfast that combines  good carbs and fiber. I usually have eggs, two slices of bread with peanut butter or regular butter. When i use regular butter the quantity i use is less, an apple or a banana. A roti and some daal or sometimes a sausage or two. I try and eat four to five meals a day but sometimes i do miss out on that. But lunch is always salad a huge bowl of daal and a flat bread. I always carry some fruit or the other. Post work out, I eat an ommlette made of egg whites, grilled chicken , some sweet potato or veggies.Dinner I usually have a light meal, so depends I make chicken salads, sometimes its a typical Indian small home cooked meal in olive oil and less salt, chicken .I keep mixing things up. Twice a week i measure and enjoy my steamed rice and chicken grilled with a huge bowl of salad. I keep experimenting with food but i always make sure it has less oil , very little salt, preferably sea salt and i  prefer grilled food.

What’s the one food you couldn’t live without, and how do you handle food cravings?

The one food i cant live without would be Chicken and Eggs. I don’t think i can ever give that up.Handling food cravings is hard. Sometimes i fail miserably. But if i have to go out i always eat at home and go so that i don’t feel the urge to eat out much. I always, carry a protein bar or some fruit with me. I drink tons of water that helps a lot. I do enjoy my cheat meals I am not going to lie. That one day of the month i go completely nuts . But when you work out religiously the craving for unhealthy or fast food or to eat out goes down automatically , the guilt sets in on your own. After a point of time to handle food cravings becomes easy.

What’s something not many people know about you?

I am usually shy around new people. I don’t always get comfortable too quickly. Takes me some time to open up and get comfortable. And i am one of those who much rather stay home, read a book, cook a good meal spend time with my dogs and my loved ones than go out to clubs or to noisy places. I enjoy being home more than anything on a regular day.
